This is not to say that Miller is a man to tread lightly when it comes to the aesthetic. His reputation as a designer is one of a man who takes chances: bold but never brash, inventive without being self-indulgent. As such, defining moments - Jane, chalk-white, garishly dressed up as a little girl, or Blanche being fed a roasted rat for "din-dins" - will not, he says, be lost in the theatre dramatisation. "It's taken a couple of years to get it off the ground, and we have had to tailor-make the script to a certain extent, but so far it's balancing well." While he proclaims himself a "shy, backstage type of man", a sense of mischief accompanies Miller's part-whispered confession that this will be one of the biggest shows the Citizens' have done "in quite some time". Says Miller: "We start off in Hollywood and we do get taken to Vegas, but ultimately it's set in the prison of their own private world."
