Casa is a court-appointed special advocate program that recruits, trains and manages volunteers who assist abused and neglected children and provide courtroom advocacy.McDermott, Casa board member and event chairman, said he hoped the auction would raise $15,000 to $20,000.Dyer resident Irene Cengel, a volunteer for Casa, checks on the children, who are usually placed in foster homes, and makes sure their living conditions are comfortable. She also makes sure they are doing well in school, even if it means employing the assistance of a tutor. Cengel said more volunteers for Casa are needed in Lake County."So many children we are seeing now are crack babies," she said.Cynthia Cyprian, assistant director of Casa, said that in 2004 Casa helped with 800 cases. Already this year, that number has increased to 875."We have about 250 volunteers, and we are going to take in 1,200 kids this year," Cyprian said. "We want to make sure we continue to see them safe."Although the majority of art displayed was auctioned, McDermott pointed to a huge piece on the wall and said he had purchased it more than a year ago."I have so much unhung art downstairs," McDermott said.
