Ogden was recruited for the UCSD job because his mentor, the accomplished composer Ernst Krenek, recommended him to administrator John Stewart, who was developing a long-range plan for the fine arts at the university. Krenek also suggested Robert Erickson, the inventive composer, author and teacher who co-founded the department with Ogdon and died after a long career in 1997, at age 80.
