BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON CONVERSATION PARTICIPANTS Former Chief Justice John Hill, Jr., Texas Supreme Court (1985-1988) Former Chief Justice John L. Hill, Jr., was elected to the Texas Supreme Court in November 1984. He served as Secretary of State of Texas from 1966 to 1968. In 1972, he was elected Attorney General of Texas. When elected as Chief Justice in 1984, he became the first person in Texas history to serve as Secretary of State, Attorney General, and Chief Justice. Judge Hill is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, International Academy of Trial Lawyers, International Society of Barristers, and Order of the Coif Legal Society, and he serves as President of Texans for Judicial Excellence, among a host of other professional affiliations. Judge Hill is a senior partner in the Houston-based law firm, Locke Liddell & Sapp L.L.P., and heads the litigation section. He graduated from the University of Texas School of Law.
