Holiday House chief adapts, keeps going - Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (subscription)
Kate Dalton had two options. She could be conservative. Or she could think big. Big won. Dalton is chairman of the Junior League of Little Rock’s 2005 Holiday House, an annual shopping extravaganza fundraiser. Soon after taking over that responsibility, she learned she faced a major decision. Held previously at the former Little Rock Expo Center, the event would have to move after that facility was bought by Pulaski Technical College. So Dalton got busy scouting new locations. One option would have been to move to an empty Kmart store. Another was to set up shop at North Little Rock’s Alltel Arena. Despite the fact that Alltel Arena will cost more than twice what it cost to rent the Expo Center, Dalton, 36, decided her choice was easy. She wasn’t having anything to do with the forlorn Kmart store. “It would have been a whole lot cheaper, but I didn’t want to do that,” she says. “Holiday House is a first-class event, and I didn’t want to make it any smaller or any less elegant.” The advantages of Alltel Arena were obvious for the event, which runs Wednesday through Saturday.
