PEL: Tax plan flawed - Lansdale Reporter
©Reporter online.com 2005 Reader Opinions:jackie blumenstockOct, 16 2005 I am certain that the Representatives had not reviewed the Commonwealth Caucus Plan. It is easy for those who recieve a 34% pay increase to assume taxes in Pennsylvania are a manageable expense for the average tax payer. It is also easy to see who Rendell has in his hip pocket. Act 72 is a far cry from relief. Those who do not have money to pay for taxes, surely will not have money to dump into slot machines. Act 72 is a sad excuse for a plan when the average tax payer will receive approx. $300 - 400 in relief and pay thousands in taxes each year. A broader sales tax does not hurt the poor or the ederly. Poor is defined as a working income of $32,000 or less in a year. Having said that, over 70% of the "poor" are homeowners that would gain significant savings through an expanded sales tax. Seniors will benefit by not having a high property tax bill each year and also studies have shown that seniors on average spend less in consumables and therefore will save a great amount in taxes.
