Mississippi has produced five Pulitzer Prize winners, including William Faulkner of New Albany, Shelby Foote of Greenville, Margaret Walker Alexander of Jackson, Eudora Welty of Jackson and Tennessee Williams of Columbus.Mississippi is the birthplace of the Blues, the only music truly original to America. And from that genre, this state has produced two kings: B.B. and Elvis.Mississippi has paved the way in education, women's rights and in the medical field. For example, Mississippi College, in Clinton, was the first co-educational college in the United States to grant a degree to a woman. Mississippi University for Women was the first state college for women in the nation, established in Columbus in 1839.
