Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, preacher, professor and writer, spoke at Claflin University Tuesday night, bringing his straightforward approach to the university’s King Lecture.Dyson addressed issues including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, Hurricane Katrina and his criticism of Bill Cosby at an assembly sponsored by Claflin’s Center for Vocational Reflection.“I have people chase me down in the airports, wanting to engage me about my books and some of y’all don’t even want to take your behinds to class!” Dyson said.Dyson spoke candidly to students, carefully weaving old-school anecdotes with new-school concepts to uplift and encourage African-Americans.“If the only thing a black person can do is to second a voice that stands against us, you ain’t no good to be up there anyhow,” he said in a discussion about Condoleezza Rice.“You got to perform black, you can’t just look black,” he continued.Along with criticizing Rice, Dyson — author of the book “Is Bill Cosby Right?” — also touched on Bill Cosby’s 2004 remarks about the state of the black race.Dyson said “Bill should have picked on somebody his own size!
