When offered a job in Tokyo three years ago, Alex Johnson didn’t think twice about moving there without visiting the city first or knowing the language. “Mizuho [Securities] had offered to fly me over ahead of time to make sure I would be up for the move, but since I had lived and traveled throughout much tougher and more remote countries and cities, I figured the preliminary trip would not be worth the extra time or money,” Johnson wrote in a recent e-mail.
