American River upsets Sierra College in season finale - Auburn Journal
ROCKLIN - For nearly four seasons, the Sierra College football was considered the king of the hill. The Wolverines made winning look easy at times while enjoying an unprecedented reign of dominance unlike any that most people in this area have ever seen.Thanks to American River College cornerback Anthony Preston, there is a new king as the Beavers dethroned Sierra Saturday afternoon in a thriller 23-19 to capture their first Mid-Empire Conference championship.With the score tied 17-17 and Sierra poised to take the lead early in the fourth quarter, Preston intercepted a Davey Johnson pass and dashed 27 yards down to the Sierra 36-yard line. Just two plays later, American River quarterback Mark Weight connected with receiver Marcus Spain who made a sensational leaping catch for a 29-yard touchdown to put American River ahead to stay 23-17 with 7:47 remaining."That interception was huge, it brought the momentum back to our side," Preston said. "Fortunately I was able to get a good jump on the ball and create the turnover."The Wolverines would not go down without a fight.
