A treasure revealed - News & Observer
In December 1879, Henry Tanner was admitted as the first black student to attend the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It was a time of rapid growth for Tanner, who was a student of and became friends with the great painter Thomas Eakins. But, as Dewey F. Mosby recounts in a 1991 exhibition catalog "Henry Ossawa Tanner," his fellow students were not always kind.
