Before the Kennedy Center opened in 1971, most of the significant musical events in Washington took place at DAR Constitution Hall, Lisner Auditorium or the Library of Congress. All three still offer programs -- indeed, the Library of Congress has a series of unusual distinction -- but, for the two decades after it opened, the Kennedy Center enjoyed a certain hegemony when it came to larger events. No more: the George Mason University Center for the Arts in Fairfax has been in place since 1990 and the 2,000-seat Music Center at Strathmore opened last year.
