The warmest moment of the whole football year - Times-Mail (subscription)

Running backs got the headlines in Trent's IU days. Justifiably. Three times in Green's first four college years, IU had a consensus All-American there: Anthony Thompson in 1988 and '89, when Green first red-shirted, then played only a little as Dave Schnell's backup; Vaughn Dunbar in 1991, when junior Green ran and passed for 25 touchdowns and nearly 3,000 yards, 2,627 of them passing, in those days when know-it-alls in the stands sneered that they could predict every Mallory-George Belu call. That predictable IU offense totaled 5,032 yards - about 420 a game, still IU's record. In Green's three starting years Š so many highs and lows. Two Bucket victories, then a career-ending loss - when he had the Hoosiers in ready reach of a last-minute comeback victory, winning season and bowl trip, but he and his backup tight end read an end-zone opening differently. The interception was run out of the end zone and appeared headed for a meaningless all-the-way return until Green caught the guy and, in frustration, slammed him down with a tackle that got him a roughness penalty, a true football rarity for a quarterback. Green was a rarity in another way, taking full blame and apologizing.Day - more available
