Peace in the Valley - OCRegister (subscription)
The star attraction is Yosemite Valley, a seven-mile stretch of meadows and forests, cut by the Merced River and surrounded by plunging waterfalls, granite rocks and half-frozen lakes. Three weeks before my visit, the valley floor was covered in snow, but rain is more common. Either way, the weather - average daytime temperatures of 30 to 55 degrees - and the terrain are ideal for hiking in the winter.
