Cole a winner at every level of athletic play - Times-Mail (subscription)

"I've known Terry since he was 8 or 9," Torphy recalled. "He lived behind ConvaCare, and we were neighbors."Torphy was a senior when Cole was a freshman at MHS."He was the best, by far, of any high school football player I've ever seen," Torphy insisted. "I loved to watch him play. I went to six of his games his senior year."Torphy said Cole reminded him of legendary Olympian Jim Thorpe."He was just a natural, all-around athlete," Torphy explained. "He could kick, run and he could run over you."When Terry hit you, he could hurt you. He was that tough. I've never witnessed anything like it."Cole opted to play college football at Bloomington, and John Pont directed Indiana to a 19-14 victory over third-ranked Purdue in 1967. The victory earned the Hoosiers an invitation to the Rose Bowl."Terry had been a halfback," Pont recalled. "We decided to go to the I-formation, and I talked to TC about moving to fullback. I explained we didn't have a lot of plays for the fullback to carry the ball."In that squeaky voice of his, he said it didn't matter where he played. He just wanted to win."That was Terry Cole."Cole blistered the Boilermakers, rushing - more available
