Helen had grown up as the third of seven children born to a Greensboro rail yard master and a schoolteacher. Though the family had little money, all of the children finished college. Helen and her three sisters attended the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, where Helen got a degree in education in 1941. Lingle, whom she married at 66, was her first husband.
