Philip R. Sandquist - Helena Independent Record

BOZEMAN — Philip R. Sandquist, banking pioneer and Bozeman native, died in his home on the morning of Feb. 2, 2006. He was 82 years old.Phil was a recognized community and industry leader. Most of his life was spent in banking, particularly as an advocate and sponsor of community banks. He enjoyed banking because he could assist new businesses, as well as individuals, with the financing necessary for their projects and plans.Although he started at First Security Bank of Bozeman as a teller, his career quickly progressed. He was the bank’s president from 1968 to 1990, and served as chairman of the board from 1969 to 1996. He retired from First Security Bank of Bozeman in 1996. Prominent as it was, his banking career was not limited to the First Security Bank of Bozeman — he also was the original incorporator and longtime director of the First Security Bank of West Yellowstone, director of Fromberg State Bank in Fromberg, affiliated with the Commerce Bank in Helena, and most recently served as director of Peoples Bank in Deer Lodge.Throughout his banking career, he participated in national and regional banking organizations.
